Patristic and Conciliar
In 313 the persecuted Church became a public one, and its song moved from the house to the basilica. The councils of these centuries — Nicaea, Constantinople, Chalcedon — argued the Church's confession into precision, and what the councils defined, the congregations sang. Ambrose taught Milan hymns that Augustine wept to hear. Ephrem the Syrian wrote theology as poetry for choirs of women. In the East, Romanos composed sung sermons for the great feasts; in the West, the chant later named for Gregory began its long life. The Te Deum, this era's great act of praise, remains in daily use seventeen centuries on. Music in this era was doctrine made memorable. The melodies carried the Creed further than any decree could.
