The song reaches behind the fall to God's prior choice. "We were found before we were lost" reverses the usual order. Election in Christ came first (Ephesians 1:4), so the person's truest state is not ruin but the love that preceded ruin. "Face to face" recurs as the marker of restored relationship (1 Corinthians 13:12). "Not by my choosing, not by my might" keeps grace unearned — God broke in and drew the person back. Verse 2 states the descent plainly. "Death was the doorway, You entered hell and called us friend." This is the harrowing of hell, held in the Apostles' Creed and preached by the Fathers: Christ descended to the dead and brought them out. Death became a passage, not a wall. "This is not religion's game, this is heaven's holy flame" sets the song against moralism. Reconciliation is not a system to perform but a fire that burns the lies once believed. The bridge returns to the album's refrain, "I am who You say I am," and grounds it before time: "I was chosen in advance." We sing this to locate ourselves before the fall, in the choosing, so that shame no longer has the first word.
